Redis version approaching end of life

#1 by woodsd42

Hi,

I received the following email:

"Hello đź‘‹

We are reaching out again regarding your Redis database XXX on YYY that requires a version upgrade.

Your Redis database XXX on exp6020 is running a deprecated version (6.2.14) and will not be supported after 02 Dec, 2024.

⏰ Upgrade now to avoid a forced upgrade on 31 Oct, 2024. Forced upgrades start a month before the EOL date.

We recommend upgrading your Redis database to the latest version supported by Heroku, which is currently 7.2.7. We perform heavy testing and validation work on all new Redis releases, including testing the upgrade procedure, and are careful to only recommend versions that we trust."

Upgrading otree and pushing a new project through otreehub does not update this issue. Given I actually want to run experiments on the 31st, waiting for the forced upgrade is also not an option (let alone the testing to be sure things still work as expected). What should I be doing in this situation, in order to upgrade the redis version?

So I figured out to do this with the Heroku CLI, but the maintenance window isn't until a few days before they'd do it automatically anyway, which doesn't give much time for testing. Do we even know if 7.2.7 is compatible with otree? I use otreehub as I'd prefer to avoid this kind of thing.

otree doesn’t use Redis since several years ago, even the later 3.x versions don’t use it.

So I'm safe to delete redis entirely then?

typically yes.
